It is interesting to note that 600 years before Braille, a Syrian Muslim, known as Ali Ibn Ahmed Ibn Yusuf Ibn Al-Khizr Al-Amidi (d. 1314 CE) was considered an expert in reading such a system. Like Braille, he too was blind from childhood.
Science, religion and preservation are not necessarily mutually exclusive in their approach to this important subject. According to Islam, peace is the rule and war is only an exception. Even in defensive war we have to analyse its result; if the result is doubtful, Muslims should avoid war. Stray acts of aggression are not enough for Muslims to rush into war. They have to assess the whole situation and adopt a policy of avoidance when war is not certain to achieve a positive result. Ibn Al-Nafees worked in the hospital as a physician, and later as a teacher of medicine. Owing to his studious nature and excellence in medicine, he became head of the Hospital and manager of its Medical school. Some years later, he moved to work as head of the Mansoori Hospital which was established by Sultan Al-Mansoor Ibn Qalawoon in 680 A.H. (1281 A.C.). Ibn Al-Nafees occupied several positions until he became the physician of Sultan Al-Dhahir Beibers.
The scope of infectious diseases is progressively more challenged by globalization. Easy and frequent air travel allows diseases to spread rapidly between communities and countries. Infectious disease control will continue to be confronted by 21st-century issues including global warming, conflict, famine, overpopulation, deforestation, and bioterrorism.
