Saying Bismillah Before Ablution:
There are two views regarding the ruling of saying bismillah before wudu’ (ablution):
First: Some scholars see that it is obligatory to mention the Name of Allah before making ablution based on the following hadith:
The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: “The prayer of a person who does not perform ablution is not valid, and the ablution of a person who does not mention the name of Allah (in the beginning) is not valid”. (Abu Dawud)
Second: The majority of scholars are of the view that it is highly recommended not obligatory to mention the Name of Allah before ablution. Almighty Allah says:
“O you who have believed, when you rise to [perform] prayer, wash your faces and your forearms to the elbows and wipe over your heads and wash your feet to the ankles.” (Al-Ma’idah 5:6)
The verse does not mention that it is required to say bismillah before making ablution.
It is always great to say bismillah before beginning anything. With regards to wudu’ (ablution), are we allowed to verbally say bismillah when there’s a toilet attached? What is the ruling on this?
