Stretching One’s Legs towards the Qiblah
Question:
Is it allowed to stretch one’s legs towards the qiblah (direction of prayer) while sitting in the mosque?
Answer:
The Ka`bah, the house of Allah and the Qiblah of Muslims, must be honored and glorified due to its highly position in the Islamic Shari`ah. Almighty Allah says:
That [is so]. And whoever honors the symbols of Allah – indeed, it is from the piety of hearts. (Al-Hajj 22:32)
Scholars said that it is preferred to face the qiblah while sitting in general, having food or drink, reciting the Qur’an, or seeking knowledge. They also mention that the deceased must be placed in the grave on the right side, while facing the direction of prayer.
Responding to this Question, Dr. Muhammad Salah states that there is nothing wrong in stretching one’s legs towards the direction of prayer. Some people claim that doing so is not permissible but they are required to bring their evidence. Dr. Muhammad inquires, “Then, what about a man who sits while turning his back towards the qiblah?”
Imam Ibn `Uthaimeen also said that there is no blame on a person if he sleeps and his feet are pointing towards the qiblah. (Fatawa Sheikh Ibn ‘Uthaimeen, 2/976.)
