The Attribute Ar-Rahman
He is Allah , the Creator, the Inventor, the Fashioner; to Him belong the best names. Whatever is in the heavens and earth is exalting Him. And He is the Exalted in Might, the Wise. (Al-Hashr 59:27)
Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “Allah has ninety-nine Names, i.e., one hundred minus one, and whoever believes in their meanings and acts accordingly, will enter Paradise; and Allah is witr (one) and loves ‘the witr‘ (i.e., odd numbers).” (Al-Bukhari)
Dr. Yasir Qadhi continues his commentary on the Beautiful Names of Allah. In today’s episode, he explains the spiritual meanings of the Attribute ‘Ar-Rahman’ and its derivatives. ‘Al-Rahman’ is an Attribute specifically relevant to Allah; none besides Him can be called or referred to as such, whereas ‘Al-Rahim’ can be applied to people. One may be described as ‘Rahim’, merciful or kind, but a human cannot be ‘Rahman’.
Then, Dr. Yasri mentions some of the rules that Allah Almighty has decreed upon Himself and are founded in the Qur’an. For examples, we read,
Your Lord has decreed upon Himself mercy… (Al-An`am 6:54)
Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) said: I heard Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) saying, “When Allah created the creatures, He wrote in the Book, which is with Him over His Throne: ‘Verily, My Mercy prevailed over My Wrath” (Al-Bukhari and Muslim)
