Al-Ghafur
He is Allah , the Creator, the Inventor, the Fashioner; to Him belong the best names. Whatever is in the heavens and earth is exalting Him. And He is the Exalted in Might, the Wise. (Al-Hashr 59:27)
Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “Allah has ninety-nine Names, i.e., one hundred minus one, and whoever believes in their meanings and acts accordingly, will enter Paradise; and Allah is witr (one) and loves ‘the witr‘ (i.e., odd numbers).” (Al-Bukhari)
Dr. Yasir Qadhi continues his commentary on the Beautiful Names and Attributes of Allah Almighty. He explains the concept of ‘Al-Maghfirah’ and its derivatives which has been mentioned 91 times in the Qur’an, making it one of the most common Names. In the classical Arabic connotations, the root ‘Ghafar’ does not only mean “to forgive”; rather it means to conceal, cover and pretend that something does not exist. Like a helmet, which, in Arabic, is called a ‘Mighfar’. Allah described Himself as ‘Al-Ghafur’,
[O Muhammad], inform My servants that it is I who am the Forgiving, the Merciful. (Al-Hijr 15:49)
Then, Dr. Yasir mentions the differences between the different derivatives of the root ‘Ghafar’.
