Qur’an and Violence: Any Relation?

Does the Qur’an ask its followers to kill non-Muslims? Is Islam a religion of violence?

Some non-Muslims claim that the Qur’an is the book that promotes violence, disorder, and anarchy in the World. They also claim that the followers of this book are responsible for spreading violence through the world. They think that the Qur’an guides its followers to punish and kill those who do not accept Islam. They wonder how Islam could be a religion of peace while there are explicit verses in the Qur’an which ask Muslims to kill non-Muslims.

There are some Muslim extremist groups who think that it is their duty to either conquer the world or at least force the people to implement Islam. These groups derive their evidences from the Qur’an and claim that Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) used to punish those who do not accept Islam.

We ask non-Muslims to understand Islam not from the actions of Muslims nowadays, but from the Qur’an directly. They should not interpret Islam on the basis of what Muslims do.

Ustadh Nouman Khan explains the following verse which a lot of non-Muslims think that it is a clear invitation to kill them,

…Kill them where you find them… (An-Nisa’ 4:89)

Ustadh Nouman sheds some light on the reason of its revelation and how the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) dealt with his opponents.
