Rewards of Reciting the Qur’an

Question:

What is the reward of reciting the entire Qur’an from cover to cover? Can one start more than one Khatmah at the same time?

Answer:

The rewards and virtues of reciting the Qur’an are many. In the Prophetic traditions, Ibn Mas`ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “Whoever recites a letter from the Book of Allah, he will be credited with a good deed, and a good deed gets a ten-fold reward. I do not say that Alif-Lam-Mim is one letter, but Alif is a letter, Lam is a letter and Mim is a letter.” (At-Tirmidhi)

In another hadith, `A’ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said, “The one who is proficient in the recitation of the Qur’an will be with the honorable and obedient scribes (angels) and he who recites the Qur’an and finds it difficult to recite, doing his best to recite it in the best way possible, will have a double reward.” (Agreed Upon)

The above hadith proves that people who are not well versed in the Arabic language or have other difficulties in reciting the Qur’an, get even a higher reward for reciting the Qur’an in Arabic for their extra effort.
