Ablution While Wearing Nail Polish
Question:
What is the ruling of ablution (wudu’) for women while wearing nail polish?
Answer:
Nail polish is a material that forms a layer over nails and prevents water from soaking through. Women use it for adornment.
Almighty Allah says:
O you who believe! When you rise to perform prayer, wash your faces and your forearms to the elbows… (Al-Ma’idah 5:6)
`Umar ibn Al-Khattab said that a person performed ablution and left a small part equal to the space of a nail (unwashed).
The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) saw that and said: “Go back and perform ablution well. He then went back (performed ablution well) and offered the prayer.” (Muslim)
This hadith shows that ablution is invalid in case a portion equals the size of the nail remains untouched by the water of ablution.
Is it permissible to perform ablution while wearing nail polish? Is it permissible for women to use it? What is the ruling of using it during the menstrual period?
