Question:

Is it permissible for family members to recite and complete the whole Qur’an for the sick?

Answer:

Reciting Qur’an is one of the greatest acts of worship. It is one of the best acts that bring the believer closer to his Lord. It is one of the highly characteristics of the faithful believers.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) praised those who keep on reciting the Qur’an in the following hadith:

Abu Musa Al-Ash`ari narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said, “The example of a Believer who recites the Qur’an, is that of a citron which smells good and tastes good; And the example of a Believer who does not recite the Qur’an, is that of a date which has no smell but tastes sweet; and the example of a hypocrite who recites the Qur’an, is that of an aromatic plant which smells good but tastes bitter; and the example of a hypocrite who does not recite the Qur’an, is that of a colocynth plant which has no smell and is bitter in taste.” (Agreed upon)

Answering this question, Dr. Muhammad Salah states that gathering to complete the Qur’an (khatmah) is a noble act as each one holds a copy of the Qur’an and recites a Surah (chapter) of the Qur’an.

Regarding the act of reading the Qur’an for the sick, it was not known at the time of the Prophet (peace be upon him) nor his Companions (may Allah be pleased with them). In such cases, any member of the family can recite the Qur’an next to the sick person for the sick will be rewarded for listening to the Qur’an, and also the reciter will be rewarded for his recitation. After finishing the recitation, du`aa’ can be made for the sick and that is the Sunnah of the Prophet (peace be upon him).
