Period Of Postnatal Bleeding
Question:
What is the maximum and minimum period of postnatal bleeding (nifas)?
Answer:
In the name of Allah, We praise Him, seek His help and ask for His forgiveness. Whoever Allah guides none can misguide, and whoever He allows to fall astray, none can guide them aright.
There is a dispute among scholars regarding the maximum period of postnatal bleeding, but the most predominate opinion is that the maximum period is forty (40) days. This due to that narration of Um Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) in which she said, “The woman having bleeding after delivery (postnatal or puerperal blood) would refrain (from prayer) for forty days or forty nights; and we would anoint our faces with an aromatic herb called wars to remove dark spots.” (Abu Dawud)
Al-Tirmidhi reported: “It is unanimously agreed upon among scholars from the Sahabah (Companions of the Prophet) and tabi`un (Followers, the generation after the Companions of the Prophet) that the nufasa’ (woman in the postnatal bleeding period) does not pray for forty days unless she sees tuhr (blood stoppage) before the end of the forty days period. She should then perform ghusl (ritual bath) and she resumes praying. The majority of the religious scholars say that a woman does pray even If she continues to notice blood after the forty days period expires and this is the opinion of the majority of jurists among whom Sufian Ath-Thawry, Ibn Al-Mubarak, Ash-Shafi`i, Ahmad and Ishaq.”
