My Wife Does Not Pray Regularly

Question:

My wife does not offer prayer on regular basis, what should I do? Should I divorce her?

Answer:

Almighty Allah says:

“O you who have believed, protect yourselves and your families from a Fire.” (At-Tahrim 6:66)

Ibn `Umar (May Allah be pleased with them) narrated that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “All of you are guardians and are responsible for your subjects. The ruler is a guardian of his subjects, the man is a guardian of his family, the woman is a guardian and is responsible for her husband’s house and his offspring; and so all of you are guardians and are responsible for your subjects.” (Agreed Upon)

First of all, you should not let this issue affect your relationship with your wife. She ought to be treated gently and kindly.

Remember that when you talk to your wife about prayer, do this indirectly. Talk to her with wisdom and good speech as this is the best way of advising people. Almighty Allah says:

“Invite to the way of your Lord with wisdom and good speech.” (An-Nahl 16:125)

Choose the good time to talk to her about Prayer. You know the keys to her heart; smart man know when to talk to their wives and when not to. Tell her kind words that encourage her to establish the Prayer. Praise her honesty and love for you and your kids. Remind her that Prayer is what connects her with Allah and it is the cause of all blessings in your life.

Remind her that quitting the prayer is a great sin, but at the same time Allah is always there to accept the prayer once he performs it and all her sins will be wiped out.
