What Are the Rulings and Etiquettes of Supplication in Sujud?
Question:
Is it permissible to make supplication in sujud (Du`aa) while offering prayer? Does it have to be in Arabic or any other language? Is it permissible to make a long supplication in the last sujud (prostration)?
Answer:
In the name of Allah, we praise Him, seek His help and ask for His forgiveness. Whoever Allah guides none can misguide, and whoever He allows to fall astray, none can guide them aright.
Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said, “A slave becomes nearest to his Lord when he is in prostration. So, increase supplications while prostrating.” (Muslim)
In another hadith, it was narrated that Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) said: “I have been forbidden to recite the Qur’an while bowing or prostrating; so while in the bowing (position) glorify (the Perfection of) the Rabb (Lord), and while in the prostrating (position) be earnest in supplication, for it is fitting that your supplications may be answered.” (Muslim)
It is recommended to make as much du`aa as you wish in sujud in any language. Hence, it is allowed to supplication in any language, regardless of the nature of the prayer weather it is an obligatory, sunnah, nafl, voluntary or night prayer.
